This is the book reading thing from Amazon. Seems really cool for me as I live in a non english country and getting english books is a pain in the ass. But I like page turning and the whole thing that is a book.
Awesome! i hope you are serious as this little thing is really spendy for a book. I will have to buy about 30 books to make up for it and when you consider bargain basement buying at borders it is more expensive per book.
For me the big one is going to be convenience as I can buy a book at home and read right now versus wait several weeks to return to the US and buy it there.
I hope you live somewhere that you can connect. The online coverage map showed I was covered but when I actually tried to connect I couldn't so I sent it back. I know I can load books from a pc but that kind of defeats the purpose.
Saw Sony's alternative to the Kindle today at Borders. Guess it's been out a while. Runs $299 to the Kindle's $359. Weighs over an ounce less. Measures 6.9" x 4.8" x 0.3" to the Kindle's 7.5" x 5.3" x 0.7". 8 level grey scale to the Kindle's 4 level. One thing tho.. the Reader appears to be tied to a PC where the Kindle isn't.
BTW.. I was looking at book prices. I just received a hardcover book the day it came out. I paid $22.95 (with shipping and handling). The Sony eReader store has the same book for $14.69. Amazon has the Kindle edition for $9.99. Not sure if there's any special charges for the Kindle edition or not (Amazon doesn't say).

Yeah that price is about right as I was doing the same thing. The other cool thing I just found is newspapers and magazines. Of course the magazines I read do not use the kindle. Gonna be freaked out if the kindle does not work where I live.

I thought coverage was only within North America? It uses EVDO which is cellphone technology, presumably meaning that Amazon has partnered with a (US based) carrier.
Yep... found it... "Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (EVDO) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, download, and read content on the go."
Panning the coverage map east shows no coverage in EU

Ok that sucks crap lets see if it is cooler to carry 30 books this way then the other way.
Dude!!! Thanks seriously this thing rocks. The flippers are too big and I am sure they will make improvements on the next ones but overall it is really cool. I like to read when I eat and it is way easier with this thing. OK almost anything is easier to do with this thing. I can read and brush my teeth etc. Add in that books are cheaper and right now! totally amazing.
i have a cybook, but the screen and e-ink display is the same as the kindle - and i recommend it highly
the sony is lower in price, but the main thing to consider is which fomat has the most books that you'd actually like to read. with kindle, you can only buy ebooks at amazon, although they do have a great selection, but you can get some for sony readers if you get the multiformat versions of the books at http://www.fictionwise.com and with cybook you can read mobipocket ebooks you can buy at places like http://www.booksonboard.comwww.mobipocket.com and http://www.fictionwise.com/ , and a bunch of other stores.
I don't have one but apparently a ton of people do. I self-published a (print) book a couple of years ago about the music biz in the '80s (non-fiction).
It sold fairly well, but I let it fizzle out and never ordered reprints due to the cost increases in printing, etc. Heard about Kindle a few months ago, threw an e-book edition up there just to see what would happen and basically forgot about it.
Then I started seeing odd deposits in my bank account, checked and it was from Amazon. Checked the stats finally and was very pleasantly surprised. Still going strong
We go to a small book store here that sells English books, and I personally have a ton of them that I have moved with me. A lot that I still need to read.
If you live in an area where they are hard to get, but there are enough english speaking people, then open a little book store.
the sony one looks much more convenient to carry around. the only thing i dont remotely understand is why in hell is it only 200mb (extrapolated they dont even show that anywhere) when a microsd card can hold 1-4gigs cheaply
