Anyone care to help a total n00b?

As you can see, I'm new and would like to get into the industry.
I've been reading up and I would either be setting up a free site or paid site. Since there's so many experienced here, perhaps help me choose.
Should I get an account with an affiliate and run a free TGP/MGP or should I get straight to running a paid site?
I'm sure most of you would advise getting my feet wet first with a free site but are free sites still generating good money?
If running a paid site, I would need content as it's hard for me to produce my own content due to legal reasons in my country.
