I have been running a profitable escort directory in South Floida for 9 years.
The following applies to U.S. based sites.
#1 -- Any attempt to sell ads to the girls and agencies will likely fail. EROS and CityVibe are so powerful in most markets that you will have a real tough time selling ad space. You would have to give away lots of free ads for a long time before you could even think of chaging for it. You'll need to develop a lot of traffic first. Having girls is a great way to attract and keep the guys coming back
#2 -- Sites that charge the guys for access are mostly bogus in terms of having real .. current .. girls. The guys figure this out pretty quickly and don't stick around too long. Also, he guys usually find the free directories and then cancel. Be prepared to develop an expensive affiliate program to attract sufficient numbers of potential customers.
I have developed the most sensible Membership biz model in the industry. I give the girls FREE ADS and let the guys surf the site for free. However, I sell an optional VIP membership. The main benefit of the Membership is that the guys get a discount fom the girls. Requiring the girls to offer a legitimate discount is the 'price of admission' for the girls.
Just a few facts to demonstrate that I know what I'm talking about:
--- I've had almost 2,000 paid members (remember we're only in S. Fla)
--- The average member stays around for more than 3 years
--- We are #2 on Google for the term ESCORTS (behind ESCORTS.COM)
--- Alexa = 50K +/- (Remember .. Only Florida)
--- Approximately 10,000 uniques a day
--- 500 - 900 people on the site at any given moment
