I have been in the adult industry since 1991 and been working as a porn director & content producer most of the time since then. This comment is so true, production costs are at an all time high, and I have been able to raise my price to my clients only by so much. It was much better in 2003 when a producer only had to be better than average to have money thrown at them for multiple scenes at a time. Recently, I have upgraded my production capability again to shoot better quality scenes with better talent, better fluorescent lighting, better makeup, better hi-res still photos shot with strobes every time and better locations so I can charge accordingly and keep my clients happy.
There's still a future in content production but only for those who can produce top notch stuff and those producers who shoot niche content or hard to film content. I have also been concentrating more on filming for my own movies and sites as well and making money online with my own traffic and through different means like VOD. I wish IO would have done this way earlier considering how early I got in the business before the popularity of the internet even, but I had disdain for the lack of original content back on the various porn web sites in the net's early days since I was a "famous" porn director who shot movies for VHS & DVD. If I had I would be retired by now!
