Airtran is your basic cattle carrier like Southwest.
Well, that's not entirely true, I'd definitely take them over southwest any day for the reserved seats alone. I dont do "general admission". They also have a small business class, no frills still but you do get a bigger seat.
Only caveats are same as any of the other non-major carriers. If there's bad weather or something, and they start cancelling flights, all bets are off. Delta, United, AA, etc will get you there sooner or later. AirTran in the past has been prone to say "tough noogies" and give you a credit or refund after cancelling flights and you're on your own to figure out the re-book.
Flying OUT of Atlanta, they dont offer enough of a discount to get me to part with my miles I earn on Delta. Though Airtran does have a sweet frequent flyer program of their own, unless it's changed, 3 round trip flights earns you a free ticket.
