I got one a few months back because my new PC seemed to be very sensitive to momentary dips, usually rebooting. The lights just flickered, the UPS beeped... it's saved me.

Oddly enough I have my laptop plugged in through one too.
I think the microwave, fridge, dryer and freezer are the only things not on a UPS.
The freezer drains the small UPS units befor it can even fully turn on.
Oh and on the fishtank I have a big one, hate to have my little fishes die cause the power was out longer then it should.
We dont get much power outage here though, only during electrical storms.Coming Soon!Comment

A UPS protects from short term dropouts (like half a second as a substation switches over) and also other problems such as brownouts (voltage wandering below specs). A generator will keep you going for ages, but you still need to start it... in the meantime your comp crashes, or switches off.Originally posted by Peaches

UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply. So long as it has sufficient battery capacity your equipment will probably never know that the mains power has disappeared. When I ran an ISP we sized the UPS for at least 20 mins runtime in the event of a total power failure.Comment

Its amazing how many brown outs people get and you'd only realize it with a UPS or surge protectors. I have 3 in my office, 1 main one and then 2 that connect into the first one (and all my devices branch off the 2 UPS'). This way I have a secondary point of failure in case one UPS fails. And my office building is surge protected in every outlet, so with all this, I'm pretty sure its safe

yair i got one too - i lost 600 gig of video editing cause of some kind of spike to my drives so i got 4 new raid drives and a ups and now i like it so i'm getting more - they weigh a lot so i only gonna buy 1 at a time or my arm will dislocateComment

That's the other reason I got the UPS. At the time I was running a RAID5 array and there was some option that provided slightly faster access, but greater risk of recently accessed files becoming corrupted if there was a sudden shutdown. They recommended that it should not be enabled unless the PC was connected to a UPS.Originally posted by fritz
