Anyone know anything about satellite internet?

i live in the fucking sticks and i can't get cable or dsl.
i know that there are some services that offer satellite
internet like Direct TV and Starband, just wondering if anyone
has any experience with this type of thing?
I heard that the download speed is good but upload speed is not.

      I looked into it....

      $500 for equipment
      $100/month for service

uploading has to be done over phonelines unless you buy more equipment (option not offered where I live)

just call up verio, tell them you need a 600meg line out there, i know a guy that could probably get that hooked up.

        with proper inducement, of course

I currently use Bell Satellite internet and I tell you, it SUCKS It's unidirectional, it's rather unreliable, but it's BETTER than the 26.4 dialup which is the max I can get in the boonies where I live. However some of the other satellite systems are bidirectional, but they have HUGE initial costs (generally upwards of $1500 at least to start) and cost about $150-$300 per month for the service. No matter what you aren't going to get anything near comparable to what you would have in a city

And with the unidirectional satellite, the satellite is for download, it still requires you to pay for a dialup connection, and it uses that connection for uploads. Paying the satellite AND the dialup accounts, expect to pay in the area of $90/month for internet.

They acutally just re-launched their new service. Full two-way high speed satellite internet.

              2 plans 579.98 up front and 59.99 a month or 99.99 a month for 12 months then 59.99 a month after that.

They say it's high speed and "astonishing" but they don't give any #'s.

Assume 80% efficiency: a 15 MB file would take 47 minutes to download with a 56Kbps modem and 7 minutes with DIRECWAY at 400Kbps.

                  ...

dont expect 400k...lol...it sux but its better than nothing

i bought one, $1000 for equiptment, 79$ a month, the downloads were about 250-300k...uploads at 15k, in 2001

I have 2 way service with Direct Way.

I live in the fuckin sticks also..but better than fcukin dial up.
Wished I could get DSL here.
                    Not for download speeds..uploads.
Downloads speeds are pretty sweet. not as sweet as DSL. But sweet.
Upload speeds is the same as 56K..but if you get the 2 way service, no need for the phone line.
