And to think it wasnt until 10 years after that first name was registered that you had to pay to register - it was $50 when they introduced "buying" domain names in 1995. The next year saw the high priced sale of tv.com for $15k in 1996

Does it really matter? Can't go back to the 80s and reg a new one, and they've been registered 20 years by multi-million dollar corporations. I doubt they're going anywhere, especially at a low, low 8.75/year current price.
