I don't want 100 fucking dollars from the Senate - I want LOWER GAS PRICES

    WTF

Bandaid politics have shown to be ineffective in the past, why would they work now?

Senators to push for $100 gas rebate checks

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Every American taxpayer would get a $100 rebate check to offset the pain of higher pump prices for gasoline, under an amendment Senate Republicans hope to bring to a vote Thursday.

    Exxon's whopper earnings a letdown

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A whopping $8.4 billion? Or only $8.4 billion?

Exxon Mobil's first-quarter profit was nearly a billion dollars more than the same quarter a year earlier. Not as much as Wall Street wanted, but still an awful lot of money - especially to people paying $3 a gallon or more to fill their gas tanks. They're wondering why oil companies don't feel their pain.

, yea take the $$, but I don't really see what the "problem" is... the price is what it is, if you don't like it, or can't afford it, tough shit, ride a bike, take public transportation, start car pooling with your coworker, etc, there are dozens of possible "solutions" that don't involve bitching and whinning...

Ahh, but did you keep reading and see what they are attaching to this bill?!?

                I saw this earlier ...

"However, the GOP energy package may face tough sledding because it also includes a controversial proposal to open part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil exploration, which most Democrats and some moderate Republicans oppose" (CNN, 2006).

I was thinking about high gas prices the other day, and concluded that I dont mind gas prices being high. In fact, for me, high gas prices are a positive. The reason being, that since gas prices have gone up, I've noticed less traffic on the freeways. So that's good because it saves me time. So paying $5 more everytime I have to fill up my tank is nothing compared to the time I save driving on the freeways.

Agree, the $100 proposal is ridiculous.

My understanding is the problem is not a shortage of oil, but a shortage of oil refineries. The refineries in the US are all 35-40 years old and running at 100% capacity. How come no one is talking about this?

You Americans should try living in places where, comparitively, fuel is $2 per litre ($8 per US gallon)... And we don't get jack shit rebates - ever.

Gas is much cheaper than it was in the 70's if you calculate in inflation. You cant regulate prices. You have to let the market control the prices. Use less gas folks, and prices will drop.

This is correct. It's not a problem of oil on the market. The problem's the speculators, and refineries. They are all (supposedly) max. capacity, and they have not, nor will, invest in making new ones. Claiming, the old "noone wants it in their backyard".
