John M. Butler complained to Naperville police when he started getting billed for adult entertainment services offered over the Internet, services he insisted he had never used.
Police say Butler has been exposed as a liar.
The 28-year-old supermarket meat cutter now faces trial in DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton on misdemeanor charges of theft and filing a false police report.
Butler went to police Jan. 14 and filed a formal report, alleging he had been the victim of identity theft, police Cmdr. Dave Hoffman confirmed. Butler at the time was living at 314 Weatherford Lane in Naperville's Old Farm neighborhood, but has since moved to near-west suburban Countryside.
He claimed an unknown third party had obtained his debit card number or gained access to his bank account and made more than $500 worth of fraudulent charges at adults-only entertainment sites on the Internet, Hoffman said.
Police believe Butler "made the charges himself and was trying to get out of paying" for them, he said.
Butler was arrested May 2 at his new home in Countryside. He is scheduled to appear in court June 3.
