By the time insects hit them, they're not that great anyways. A quick rinse should take any insects off them, which you should be doing anyhow. The best time to pick is right after a small shower. These little suckers will pop up in a matter of minutes. I've hiked uphill and found full 3-4inch mushrooms in my footprints on the way back downhill before. That's when you get the primo eating. If you wait on them to get fatstalked and soft, they're not much good for anything but soup stock. They are a delicacy in a lot of high end european restaurants, and are really quite tasty. I'm craving some fresh morels now.
