Newbie Q&A

First, I am new (no shit huh with the postcount!? ;)). So a quick intro: my background is in linux systems administration. I've run anything from redhat (centos, fedora), gentoo, debian, and freebsd web servers and lease servers from a few data centers around the US and also worked for web hosts/data centers as programmer/technician. I've hosted friends and families and also personal sites on my servers for fun. I am also a web developer. I used to do designs for internet service providers when I was in high school for anywhere from $150 - $1500. Got into not only designs but development of sites from the how the site looked to the behind-the-scenes of web sites for administration purposes.

Now, I am a webaholic and also love porn which made me decide to mix the two and work on an adult site. I have the space, bandwidth, time, resources, design, and programming needed to start a web site and keep it going. Now, this is where my newbieness can be seen.

It seems like the sites that I been a member of previously and enjoyed being a member of require applicant's website to have a certain about of traffic. And as I've stated, I'm working on opening a new site so I have some Qs that need As for in this Q&A:

1) Where can I get samples/content that I can use within my site?

2) Are there are pay sites out there that accept new sites without having any specific 'requirements' before a webmaster can become an affiliate?

3) I am not planning on a TGP site but how do these sites work? I know there is a script involved but do these scripts automate everything? It sometimes seems like TGP sites just take content from paysites and put them in their own little gallery - isn't this a copyright issue?

4) My primary focus is to maximize traffic and popularity; my priority is not to make as much cash as possible. Are there link exchange programs out there that I can use or how did you make your site earn traffic?

Some more questions but these questions are regarding GFY:

5) is it just for new members or are private messages disabled? there a way to contact people privately or just by YIM/ICQ/AIM/etc ?

6) other reasons why the index of the vbulletin template is all hacked up, I'm too used to the 'Last Post' column showing the actual username of the last post in particular forums but it's just showing the time.

Hi and welcome,

I will try to give yuo some short answers.
1) What kind of site are you planning to create. (what kind of content).
2) Yes, there are programs that accept affiliates without much requirements, but to give you some examples, we would also need t know whatkind of content you're looking for. As it would be wise to use sponsors that have similar content as you are planning on your own site.
3) It's not a copyright issue. Sponsors "give" away that content to be promoted. However only their affiliates are off course allowed to use the content.
4) Getting good and enough traffic is something I guess all webmasters are trying to get. As this will also get them some good and enough cash
It would try to get your site listed with as many search enigines as possible.
Put your url on as many link sites as possible.
And when yuor site is finished get some affiliates of your own, as they can get you losts of traffic as well.
Also try to talk to some of the guys on this board.
I believe Choker is a traffic expert, maybe he can help you out.

Thanks for your response. I have a domain that is very generic but definitely brandable as an adult site and relatively short and sweet... so I was leaning toward doing a review site of paysites and if that goes well, start partnering up with a store to purchase newly released dvds and send them to reviewers so that they can submit a review. I know there are plenty of review sites out there but definitely not as much as TGP sites.

I also went to those sites that allow you to buy and use their photographs but it seemed like the amount of money required to not start out with a single set of pics was greater than the monetary risk I was willing to take so decided not to go that route.

See though, I don't really even know what other types of sites there are to be honest with you. I'm also a bit into photography and plan on purchasing a Canon 30D Digital SLR when it is released but where the heck would I be able to find models to pose?

I may have the foundation required to run a site but it won't go anywhere because I wouldn't know where or how to drive it. I guess I got plenty o' reading to do.

Don't worry about how TGPs work because you don't want to start one anyway. At least not until you have a hell of a lot more experience than you do now.

You can get content for free from most sponsors, or else you need to buy it from providers, like http://www.ounique.com

Eh, you're right. I just registered for one pretty good site and already have access to their gallery stuff I can use. I registered for another but it looks like it's an 'application' process and they have to review my app.

Epassporte is easy to use for a lot of affiliate programs, they can make sure that their affiliated get paid the way they want. By wire for example.
Usually when the webmaster would pay out themselves the costs woud be higher.

You need to reconsider your statement there.

If you are making a good chunk of change from affiliates then you need to report your earnings in your 1040 and whatever else is required (like a Schedule C). Consider why affiliate require you to either enter your SSN or Business Tax ID... (because they are going to report the the amount of cash sent out to affiliates).

Well, to give you guys a short update. I've registered with a couple of good affiliates and even talked with the managers of the programs and some of them has been very helpful.

I'm finally using the domain I registered on 15-jul-2004. I have already worked out a mockup of the design and will be starting to code the backend in PHP/MySQL to save time in the long end.

I think now I have 5% of everything covered, the other 95% is of course traffic and marketing. How do you guys suggest I get some initial traffic for a new site? It will have some content... but overtime it will grow tremendously.

Still lotta work involved. Willing to get it done for the site's success.

It will be an overall and encompassing site - definitely won't be a pay site. More like an informational site with reviews and articles relating to this industry. I plan on making it strictly professional, completely without annoyances to visitors, and updated frequently. My goal would be to attract a loyal visitor base and am willing to reinvest in 100% of whatever earnings I make in order to achieve my goal since it doesn't really cost me anything other than time spent (and I have plenty of time for about 2 months).

Doomed to failure or not, here I come (no pun intended)!
