The problem is that so many horses have been bred with the Native Dancer bloodline that horses are very brittle now because of it. I've seen estimates that 75% of thoroghbreds have been crossed with that line.
Native Dancer's line produces fast, muscled up horses that are prone to leg injuries. Eight Belles is a Native Dancer descendant through her dam's sire.

The horse went down as soon as the bones broke. Two broken bones would not have supported the horse's weight. They were broken as she pulled up after the race was over.
