"Know Your Customer" and related regulations are laws that all financial institutions doing business in the U.S. must abide by, including Epassporte.
There is no simple answer - the U.S. population, overall, is complacent ... they don't mind being watched if it's "for their safety", and furthermore most want to be told what to do...
The U.S. government, like most any government, when left unchecked, continues to expand and further control the masses, and thus such laws, like the "Know Your Customer", are the result...
Digressed a bit, but the bottom line is that until the laws are changed, financial dealings will be ever further scrutinized...
Many banks, brokerages, eCurrency changers (ie. LondonGoldExchange), and even the U.S. Post Office have in the past couple of years, been agressively retroactively demanding ID, paperwork, etc from their current longtime customers.
Ultimately, for many people, the choice will be the lesser of the evils ... providing all sorts of paperwork to ePassporte (and services kinda like it, such as as PayPal) --or-- using a regular bank instead ... my guess is that many more people will insist on payment via ACH (direct deposit), wire, etc to their bank account...
An added benefit of using banks is they must follow many strict rules, and thus one can have confidence their money will still be there, and available for use ... unlike many third-party places, such as PayPal, that have a nasty reputation of losing funds, holding funds, lack of service, etc.
