In Montreal, if you have an office ( to earn a living ) at home, you need to apply for an " occupancy permit " . The city limits the usage to no more then 33% of the habitable space.
They charge a one-time fee . You must post the permit in your office.
This permit not given for all type of business, but those that will not create excess traffic , noise, or risk .
If you want to have a doctor's cabiner, forget it ...
I am pretty sure that this is in force in quite a majority of cities ....
But again, you are smart, so this must all be bs .....
