Cool. Definitely I will get a copy and install it to my desktop soon. I am very happy with the redhat linux which I am using now. Nowadays there are so many choice and I won't go back to Window XP anymore.

nsplugin wrapper works quite good for me. You'll need ia32libs tho, because it 'simulates' flash... but hey, why not get 32bit firefox and relax ;)

So far I think only Photoshop works on Wine, no?
As soon as Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Flash Pro work 100% on it (with or without Wine) I'll switch to using Linux on desktop. Until then I'll just be playing around with distros on my laptop. (currently OpenSuse, tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, DSL, Sabayon, Fedora Core)

I'll stick with Gutsy for a bit longer. I'm tired of getting burned with halfass driver support and screwed up ACPI.

So that's why I get daily emails thanking me that my ACPI hacks that I made for Gutsy is the only way people can actually set the LCD backlight levels under Hardy? If I had a machine I could play with, I'd consider it.

It's just a simple parser in bourne that reads the levels offered for the LCD and lets you switch up, or down, respectively. I'm more of a Kubuntu kinda guy. I'm glad Hardy will have both 3.5.9 and the 4.x version separately, since, well, KDE 4 sucks.

again, you can most of them And for the ones that you cannot, you often have similar apps made for Linux!

Kde 4.x sucks so far I agree, but it's got a huge potential! I am stick to 3.5.9 and it's rock stable for me, but will definitely switch to 4.x when it gets better stability and customization ability ;)

I'm pretty clueless with this stuff, maybe one of you can point me in the right direction...

I have a computer sitting here with Windows 98 (yes, I know)... it is a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with half a gigabyte of RAM. Right now, it basically doesn't work. I turn it on and it gets to the desktop screen and then just stalls. Anyway, what I really want to do with it is use it as sort of a slave machine. Have it run my music, movies, and some of my background running applications (Stats Remote, a few others.)

What is my best option for operating systems? A Windows XP license runs $200, I just find that totally ridiculous. I can buy a computer with Windows XP Professional on eBay for $200.

Oh,I guess I forgot to mention that I will need to be able to login to this computer through a VNC application.

If you just want to stream music from it, you can do that perfectly fine with almost any OS. You obviously wouldn't need VNC unless you really wanted to. Burn a Ubuntu CD; it's fully functional. See if Firefox and the media applications (I think it usually comes with RhythmnBox) work. If so, you can even run it all from the CD and not harm your existing 98 install.

I really do want VNC. And I want to get rid of the 98 install, it really isn't working. Anyway, I guess I could give it a try, wouldn't hurt. :-)

Either burn Ubuntu or any of of the other Linux distros as an ISO image, or order Ubuntu or Kubuntu (which comes with KDE instead of Gnome preinstalled) for free here: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Will take a few weeks to ship though.

You can even try Ubuntu without having to install it on your harddrive. Just boot from the Ubuntu CD and you'll be able to use the OS right away without installation.
It won't be as fast as if it was installed on your HD but it works.

If you don't like it. Just throw the CD out and restart your computer and Windows will boot. :P

I hate admitting it, but this version seems pretty decent and is peppier than the past few releases. I'm sure it is still a mess "inside", but if I don't have to worry about it, and I haven't yet, well, I won't worry about it.
