Resolution of Live TV vs. recorded

so photog gurus and science buffs, why exactly is it that live TV is always clearer than recorded tv? (im not even getting into hdtv as we dont have that here in thailand, assumedly hdtv that is recorded loses some vibrance too?)

i can understand oldschool technology making this happen, but in todays day and age, why does this still seem the status quo?

When I watched TV, it was HD digital. The streams I saved were the raw MPEG streams, and they looked just as clear as they did coming down.

Television is MASSIVE bandwidth. I'm assuming the losses are in the compression.
