          Why do pictures in banners always turn out so horrible? Not saying you could do anything about it, is there a 256 colour limit or something in GIFs still?

          Would this banner not look better as a non-animated JPG with a clearer picture?

            Yeah, not much you can do about it if it's a .gif. That's why .jpg banners always look a lot better. Animated .gifs are more eye-catching, though. So it's pretty much a trade-off.

              It also comes down to file size. You could have a life like image, but the banner will be 200kb and that's not efficient for large scale promotion.
