    Saw 'The Mist' earlier tonight...

...and surprisingly found it quite good.

It was faithful to the original King story - the creature f/x were well done, and the characters believable.

One of those rare 'based on a Stephen King' movies that surpassed my expectations and rivaled how I visualized it many years ago when reading Skeleton Crew.

Now if only they'd make "The Jaunt" in to a movie.

Worst scene of the movie was when they went into the pharmacy and found the spiders and just stood there in horror. Come on, get the fuck outta there, morons. LOL

I bought it a week or two ago and watched it. It was directed by the same guy who directed Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it. However, here are my problems with it. First, there's too many stupid people in it. That black guy was a tard. The religious lady, I just wanted her to die painfully from the first time she opened her mouth. But, these types of people exist and I believe if something like that really happened. A lot of what happened would have happened like that. But, with there being so many stupid people in that store every time they did something else stupid it took me out of the movie. I would think, "People aren't that stupid." But then I would have to remind my self that they really are.

The other thing I didn't like was the ending. I was ok with it. But, I thought they could have done it better. I mean, here's these people who survived all this shit. Then they run out of gas and automatically make the decision to do what they did. I mean, there was no waiting. No thinking about it, nothing. Maybe it's just me, but, those damn bug things would have to be breaking the windows and crawling inside before I did what he did. So of course, as soon as he did what he did. I actually said out loud what was going to happen next and sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

Had there been a store full of smart people or at least smarter people and had they waited just a little longer at the end to do what they did I would have thought the movie was great.

I realize I am being picky about it. But, the director has made two of my most favorite movies, the guy can direct and write and this was it? It's like they dumbed the characters down to make it a horror movie instead of making them a little smarter and creating a really scary movie with a real shocking ending.

Side note I never read the story from the book, though I did listen to audio of it they did as a radio play. It was basically the same as the book from the short story from what I understand. And, the ending that they rewrote for the film. Stephen King actually told the directer, had he thought of that ending, he would have ended his book that way. I thought that was kinda cool.

I quite agree with you - in that it seemed like a disproportionate number of stupid people in the store. But...people CAN be rather creative when it comes to inventing ways of being stupid. Lemmings and sheeple.

At least the director attempted a few times to have the smarter characters try and explain why so many people were stupid (people in fearful situations will naturally look towards a solution no matter how dumb it may be - something to that effect).

Yep, the black guy was a tard, thu and thru. He seemed okay up until the point the shit hit the fan in the store, but then de-evolved from there.

And I thought they ran outta bullets in the pharmacy? But then they magically seemed to have a few more in the end when they capped the religious bitch.

I thought it amusing the check-out 'boy' (the Ollie Weeks character) turned out to be the calm, cool and collected hero of the day. The dude you'd least expect to be 'target shooting state champion' and possess some testicular fortitude.

The movie was no Green Mile or Shawshank Redemption of course...but at least they gave it a good effort IMHO. The DVD special features had a cool little docu-segment on the real-life movie poster artist.

yeah the ending sucked... sometimes directors just get sadistic toward their main characters for no good reason, and that was a good example.

The characters were fleshed out a lot better in the book, they came off as pretty one dimensional in the movie but all in all, a pretty serviceable monster movie imho.

I watched it the other night. I didn't care for the movie but damn did the ending take some serious balls. The ending made up for that piece of shit that was put on reel for 2 hours.

Basically, the main character was punished for lack of faith. The whole show was an allegorical story about the power of faith. Crazy church lady turned out to be correct.

Some people have a problem with how quick they decided to off themselves, but maybe they weren't paying attention. A 50 story tall creature had just walked past them, then they heard a rumbling in the distance coming toward them-- which they immediately assumed was an army of creatures(actually the US army). If they had held out their faith just a little longer they would have been saved.

Not being a very religous person myself, I hated the way David was punished the way he was. I was on his side through the whole movie, and I loved seeing church lady get it.

Astute observation - but while church lady inevitably turned out to be essentially correct, her methods were whacked. She could have just as easily have been completely wrong and the survivors in the car could have been tentacle fodder. Its a crap shoot either way. Given all they'd been through at the market and pharmacy...it was natural/logical to assume the sounds in the distance were the creatures coming to finish them off. Holding on to blind faith at that point wouldn't have been the answer.

If anything, the movie aptly demonstrated the persuasive power of pseudo-religious kooks who rile up the masses with their insanity (a la Jim Jones & David Koresh) in times of peril.
