    The truth about cheap hosting

Almost every day I see people here asking for cheap hosting. The truth is, there is no cheap hosting if you create traffic. There is cheap hosting for pages that don't have any traffic, but why even host those?

I have several cheap hosts for TGPs and some galleries. We try to treat them like raw eggs, knowing they'l kick us out if we use the purchased bandwith, but sometimes you just get a little bit more vistors.

This morning servage suspended my account. Reason: too many visitors. They say our sites make the other sites on the server slow, so we are hurting their customers.

I had purchased 600 MB and have so far only used 5% of my purchased volume this month. Their speed is 10mbs and their servers work at a glacial speed anyway, so why bother restricting anything?

It's really lovely to get up in the morning and see your galleries nuked, knowing 100k visitors per day will get a "page not found". Then try to get a hold of the company. They are located in Europe and the US but don't think they have telephone numbers or faxes on either location.

The bottom line is either pay premium bucks for a second or third dedicated server or start liking companies that sell you terrabytes for less but won't let you use it.

And always read the 100 pages of fine print they have hidden somewhere on their page.

Everything has it's place, and I guess for some people, cheap hosting is attractive for the applications they're hoping to host. Personally, I too have been burned too many times in the past by this kind of deal, or by policy clauses kicking in when you come close to using what was specified for your hosting plan. My guess is that many of the dirtcheap hosting packages are used by less-reputable providers as loss leaders to get people onboard, hoping to upgrade them later, or to burn them with fees for overages.

Like everything else, you get what you pay for. Having said that, I can vouch for the fact that major US cities often have datacenters and network hubs where bandwidth can be resold far cheaper than in smaller centers. I'm talking five, ten, and twenty times cheaper. On that level, pricing options are available for hosting companies in those larger centers that smaller cities couldn't dream of. It's almost a chicken-and-egg problem for network companies in smaller cities.

If you're using 600 gigs worth of bandwidth, you should be able to find a provider who will give you a dedicated box for not a lot of $ ($100/month or so, with a decent provider like EV1Servers.net or ServerMatrix.com, for example).

At that level of bandwidth, you really shouldn't be screwing around on shared hosting, because if you're getting consistent traffic and some OTHER site on the same box gets clobbered, people won't be able to get to your site either... and there's always the possibility that someone's site will get hacked and YOUR site will be affected because of what else is going on with that box.

Oh, I have a decent dedicated Pentium4 server with 100Mbps that costs me about 300 bucks a month, and I am very happy with the European host company, but I don't want movie tgps slowing it down during peak times. That's why I have been using "cheap hosting" on the side. I see now (again) that it's just not worth all the frustration.
I am thinking about getting a Celeron or a small Pentium now from my main provider (Titan-Networks in Frankfurt, they have NL-Server too, btw)...

Why not put full pictures and media in a free upload host to save bandwith for thumbnail and html?

                    Because

Because the free hoster is gonna get a hernia when I try to blow 10 GB of his volume/day. I had movies on free hosts and they didn't even download when I was the only visitor because they host 500 pages on one server. If your neighbor on the same server happens to have a page with things like "Paris Hilton giving head on Mainstreet" there wont be any bandwith left for you. Now, imagine you were a websurfer and a free movie of a certain page dosen't load, would you join that page?

                          FUCK SERVAGE!

I had the same thing happen to me a few days ago, I used 22G's in 1 day, and my site was taken offline for the rest of the day. This creates a ton of problems because all the tgp's/mgp's that had my content listed yanked me off, and many blacklisted me.

It is bs that they limit any daily value to 20 - 22 g's in there eyes its 20G's * 30 days = 600gb.

I have dropped my hosting with them as I have had to limit myself to how many pagehits I get a day.

I am looking for a new provider that isn't going to fuck around like servage does.

I notice alot in the webhosting industry, that many people want something for nothing. In the case that people want to boost thier traffic, and either allow people to view thier information, or purchase their product, there will indeed be business expenses to do so. There are many reasonable hosts out there that offer good traffic, and space rates. But with anything good, it will cost something to retain it.
