Ok, totally newbie question for you all. I have my free site up. it is generic looking and needs alot of help, but hey, ya gotta start somehwere, right?? anyways, my question is this.....How do I get traffic?? I know I can buy it and pay for search engine submissions, but being I am just starting out, I am looking for any info on how to get some free traffic. Please let me know if anyone has any good ideas.

Me thinks that the best way for free traffic is to a) Use SEO (search engine optimization) or b) submit your website to the billion and one places that have links.
If it's a free site with galleries and such, submit the galleries.
If anyone has any other methods please indulge cause I'm a newbie too and these are pretty much the two methods that I've figured out so far. -
This site is much more like a hub than a free site...in this business a traditional "free site" consist of at least 4 pages:
Page 1) A warning page (Site title, recips to link list, enter and exit links etc.)
Page 2) A menu page (listing your galleries)
Page 3) Gallery #1 (pictures or movies)
Page4) Gallery #2 (pictures or movies)
Here's a basic example of a free site:

As you can see this site is built within my main domain.
To get traffic you could build sites like these and submit them to link list and link to your hub from within your free sites.

Yeah put up some content and SEO it for the keywords you want. You can download the free trial verison of IBP SEO tools
This will introduce you to SEO and submitting your sites to tons of search engines.Comment

If you have more than 5000 unique pics, make the galleries with them and buy Yahoo directory submission for your free site - could be up to 1 thousands visitors from Yahoo directory, plus PR for google also, or firstly try to Buy Clicked TrafficComment
