Converting Video ? What is the best format?

I have a lot of exclusive content, which I do not want members to copy. If I convert my video to mpeg or wmv, I will have to run DRM to protect my videos. However, the more I research DRM ? it does not look reliable. There are ways around DRM to copy files. Moreover, DRM prices range from doable to WTF ? some are super expensive.

I am considering converting all video to flash and have controls on the flash. I like flash but realize most people use Microsoft to view video. Moreover, I have to what bandwidth; I have several thousand hours of video. So bandwidth is a VERY important issue.

Any suggestion? I need to use low bandwidth, protect my content, and is reliable.

    Thank you

More and more consumers are learning about DRM, and are learning they do not like it. I would suggest rotating the content libraries online at any given time so as to encourage continued subscriptions, and enforcing transfer limits daily to discourage blatant site rippers. People will steal no matter what you use.

Many online-savvy people are also specifically anti-flash, so that seems troublesome.

Considering your specific requirements (low bandwidth use, protect content), I would suggest wmv format. The compression is pretty good for the filesize, and there are some tricks to embed it in pages keeping 95% of users from snagging it. It's also what most of the big dogs producing content distribute through their member sites, so if it works for them, i would stick with it.

There will be always a way around against any protection - 100% safety is not possible
Anyhow, flash is not that bad - even I do not use it - but regarding the bandwith only a streaming server will help. Just a pitty that the Macromedia Streaming server is that fu....g expensive

I prefer to use flash video streaming. With flash video running through a communication server you can control the bandwidth and stream the videos from the server. Flash video will also stream almost instantly as opposed to having to download a percent of the video before it will play.

The cost of the Flash Communication Server is very expensive but there is also an open source communication server for Flash called Red5 due to be released on 4/17 which would cut the most of the expense out.

I find the best video format and compression is Quicktime with the new H.264 codec.

This doesn't mean it is the most recommended format for a site, since many customers are only used to WMV and may be MPG.

The problem with stealing is as follows: You may care less if the average user downloads your stuff and stores it on his HD for personal use. You want to prevent the pros from stealing, those who resell your material. Unfortunately those are the ones who know their ways around, and the more you do to prevent them from stealing from you, the more creative they'll become. Bottom line: It's probably impossible.
Put a copyright logo on everything and get a lawyer if you see your stuff on someone elses site. There are lawyers who can kick ass even in far away countries.

I'd recommend encoding it into FLV format, then playing it via a Flash FLV player (ask if you want one, i'll send you it for free). Of course, this method isn't foolproof - those in the know can determine how to get the FLV file, but seeing as there aren't many video players that can play pure FLV files (hence the use of the Flash FLV player on your site), and not that many people that even know it is a video format, i don't think you'll have anywhere near as many problems.

The best bit about it is that, if i remember correctly, Macromedia Flash is the most installed plugin available, so you can be sure most, if not all, of your members can see it and the file size of FLV movies tends to be much less than other formats.

I'm pretty strongly anti-Micro$oft, but I gotta say that WMV pretty much has the market sewed up.

Quicktime has very small market penetration on the PC side, and people don't want to fuck with downloading it and getting the nagware every time they launch the player. THe codec is excellent, and it's cross-platform, but it just hasn't caught on with Windows... due in no small part to Microshaft's anti-competitive activities.

Real is cross platform, but everyone I know says it's a dying format, again due to Microshaft.

Doggone Media, who has a small but fabulous pay-per-view service, just decided to add Windows Media after going Flash-only for several years. Although Flash is fully cross-platform, a lot of customers simply didn't want to fuck with it. So they will support both.

That is our plan as well... we're Windows Media now, and we plan to add Flash to support our Mac and Linux customers.
