I am an American who lives in Europe and I have not found this to be true. Most Americans are basically open minded and tolerant of other cultures (The United States is a melting pot of many different cultures so this makes sense). The Europeans I have met tend to be very nativist and obsessed with ethnicity. The level of racism that is considered normal in Europe would be considered completely shocking to your average American.

Just go to a European football match if you doubt me. I have never in my life heard racist chants at an American sporting event, but these are commonplace throughout Europe (I was once on the tube in London and heard the entire train of Arsenal fans chanting "The Yids are going to Auschwitz!" before a Tottenam Hotspurs match because Tottennam is considered a Jewish backed team). Blacks are regularly mocked and subjected to racist chants during sporting events throughout Europe. The list of examples of endless. The idea that Europeans are more open minded or tolerant than Americans is absurd.
