Years ago my dad died while in Florida and I was desperately trying to get there to be with my mom. I arrived at the airport to find my flight canceled due to fog. So I sat and waited for hopefully another flight. I heard my name paged, and Delta told me the fog was lifting a bit, but would be back and close everything down again. There were going to be able to get one flight out to New York and they wanted me on it. They had a porter waiting for me, and the guy literally ran with me to the gate. They put me in first class (I paid for coach), and they put my full size suitcase in the food/beverage area because they said there would be not time to get it on/off.
Before landing, a stewardess came over and told me that all passangers on the plane would be held back to enable me to get off first. There would be someone waiting for me when the door opened and to just follow him.
Off the plane I went with the porter running madly through the airport to outside the building where a stretch limo was waiting for me. The limo raced at breakneck speed to the other airport in New York. When I arrived there was a man waiting for me there....telling me that the plane for Florida was supposed to leave 10 minutes earlier but they held the plane for me. We raced to the plane and I was again put in first class. Upon landing in Florida, another limo was waiting for me to take me to my mothers house.
Sometimes a company does something right. I will never forget what they did for me that day. Talk about above and beyond.
