          Windows XP 64-bit Edition: built for Intel Itanium processors. (discontinued by Microsoft).

          Windows XP Pro X64: built for x86-64 processors (Intel Core 2 Duo's for example).

              To expound upon this: You need a 64 bit compatible BIOS as well; many of the first (and cheaper) Core Duos were 32 bit locked. AMD's 64/Intel EM64T will work. The Itanium is IA-64, which is different (and now, abandoned).
