Sorry - didnt mean to insult you, I'm a bit older and remember him well. FYI:
Born on February 17, 1941 in Hartford, Connecticut, Pitney initially had no real ambition to be a singer. According to his official Web site, as a boy he was more at home collecting stamps and coins, trapping mink and muskrat and experimenting with electronics.
But music gradually began to take over his life and he formed a band while a student at Rockville High School.
After high school, Pitney teamed up with singer Ginny Arnell and recorded for Decca as Jamie & June.
His initial successes came when other musicians recorded his songs and he concentrated on writing rather than performing.
Roy Orbison released "Today's teardrops" as the B-side of his hit single "Blue Angel" in 1960, while "Rubber Ball" became a million-seller hit for American artist Bobby Vee and Marty Wilde.
Pitney then began to record his own songs, scoring his first American top 20 hit with the title song from the move "Town without pity".
Another movie theme, "The man who shot Liberty Valance" gave him another hit but it was the 1963 release of "24 hours from Tulsa" that brought him worldwide fame.
Pitney had 16 top 40 songs in the United States from 1961 to 1968, and he had 40 hit songs in Britain up to 1974.
He enjoyed a revival in Britain in 1990 when his duet with Marc Almond "Something's gotten hold of my heart" reached number one

Shows what you know. Gene Pitney was a great singer and a huge star, whether or not you know who he is.Originally posted by GatorBAmerican superstar Gene Pitney has been found dead aged 65 in his bed in a Cardiff hotel.

24 Hours from Tulsa, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Town Without Pity, Only Love Can Break a Heart; an amazing catalog.

I know quite a bit actually. He may have ONCE been a superstar but he isn't now. I can poll 1000 people in America and maybe 5% would recognize the name. Quit patronizing me. If anyone knows anything about anything, it's me. I'm a triva encyclopedia. I'll kick yours and anyone else ass a Trival Pursuit. Don't get your panties in a wad just because someone doesn't know who someone is. I wasn't insulting the man I just said he's not a superstar.Originally posted by SpaceAceShows what you know. Gator, if you don't know who Gene Pitney was you ain't gonna win many trivial pursuit contests! ;)
He was a very big star and even last night played on stage to a full house of several thousand people. Now, if he was a nobody, he would hardly be packing them in at a venue in a foiegn country, would he?
I am in my mid 40's and know many of his songs from the 60's, and I am sure you would as well if you heard them on the radio.Comment

Spot on. 'So Trivia master gator - who is Gene pitney ?'
'fuck knows - never heard of him'
'sorry - you lose.'
Some people dont know when to quit when they're ahead. Ok - you never heard of him, fair enough, up to you, probably best for you not to comment then, but when people point out who he is, you come up with this master of trivia shit and make yourself look very dumb.Get yer Tits out for the boys

Ask 1000 people under the age of 30 and/or who know little about music older than them and they may very well not have heard of him. Ask 1000 around when he was making music and then ask another 1000 around the world (particuarly in the UK where Marc Almond brought him back into view) and they will know who he is. In addition to being a singer he wrote a lot of good songs for other people.
I bet if you asked 1000 people in the States under 20 you would find pleanty that never heard of Joan Crawford, Dean Martin or even Sammy Davis Junior but it doesn't mean they aren't/weren't superstars.
If you can seriously tell me you have never heard 24 Hours From Tulsa than I will gladly play you at musical trivial pursuit anyday - for cash.Comment

I'm a music trivia buff and have barely heard of him either. Notice everyone who knows of him is from the UK - he may have been American but he's not well-known here.Originally posted by palladin
