I normally don't race on public roads but like anyone else I aswell am in a hurry
sometimes or drive faster than allowed when the roads are dead quiet.
I think thats the #1 excuse for people who think they can drive too fast.
The problem is more concentrated or not. If a kid jumps in front of your car 20mph too fast can make a HUGE difference.Comment

You might be the exception to the rule, but that still doesn't give you an excuse to be "above the law". Even though you might drive way better when you're doing 60kmph instead of 50, a limit is a limit and it's a limit for all sorts of reasons.Originally posted by DynaSpainI don't want to claim that driving is safer.....however when I speak for myself.

whenever I drive slow I get distracted a lot faster by all kinds of stuff. When
I drive faster I'm much more focussed on the road and traffic. Because of
my racing experience I look much further ahead on the road than regular
drivers and I can my reaction time is a lot faster aswell and I have much
better control over motorvehicules than people who learned driving at age
18 in a driving school. I have attended and given loads of advanced driving
courses
Now I'm not at all an expert on this but I'd assume the speed limits are there to make sure you have enough time to brake in case something unexpected happens, for example.
And volante, the statistics might well be representative for the entire UK. But even if they were highly accurate for the whole world, it's still a very feeble attempt to find "reasons" to speed. "Look, I can speed because I know how to drive and this statistics clearly show that more people die from lung cancer and food poisoning each year than me killing people with my car". It's not really the point is it?Comment

I never claimed to be above the law. I got caught while speeding and I will
get fined for it. That sucks but I will accept the consequences. I don't
encourage anyone to drive faster than limits but like almost every other
human on the planet I sometimes do.....intentionally or unintentionally it
happens from time to time. Yes the way I got caught was imho a bit
cheesy but then again if I didn't drive too fast I wouldn't have been caught.
The fact that I feel a bit sour about the fine and all the hassle this is causing
me is a normal reaction. I don't like to part with my money.......I never said
that I've been treated unfair or anything.Comment

It's not, and it's not the point I'm arguing. My point is that people are becoming vociferous about speeding and how bad it is, when many other factors are far, far more dangerous but are ignored in favour of something that can easily be measured. The message getting rammed down peoples throats (at least here in the UK) is that breaking the speed limit is bad, keeping to the speed limit is good IRRESPECTIVE of other road conditions and circumstances.Originally posted by sspAnd volante, the statistics might well be representative for the entire UK. Cops with speedguns and especially speed cameras do fuck-all to improve road safety. What they do manage is to raise revenue and make their crimes-solved figures look good.
Then again, it is somewhat personal for me - a friends daughter was knocked down and dragged for 20+ metres by a driver who wasn't paying attention. Amazingly she survived, but all the driver could say when he got out of his car was "I was only doing 25mph, I wasn't speeding". If the fucker had been breaking the limit by 1mph and watching the road instead it wouldn't have happened.Comment

Often speedtraps cause accidents because when people spot them all of a sudden they hit the brakes hard, even when they're not driving too fast.Originally posted by volanteIt's not, and it's not the point I'm arguing. You're right you didn't. Don't think I'm trying to give you a hard time here. Just some of the comments made by others in this thread made me point out the obvious.Originally posted by DynaSpainI never said that I've been treated unfair or anything.
When I speak for myself, I've never had a speeding ticket, but was ticketed once for wrongly parking my car. It sucks getting a ticket and you always feel the cops are wrong. But I care very much for safety in traffic and I'm amazed by some people's attitudes towards it. It's not a playground and we all know it..Comment

I know, they are all over the issue of not speeding here. And honestly, I have only lived here for a year so I'm not an expert on the "british driver". To be honest with you, I'm stumbed sometimes by how some people drive in this country. Of course, it doesn't take much to pass a driving exam.Originally posted by volanteIt's not, and it's not the point I'm arguing. Unaware drivers are just as horrible as speeding drivers. My girlfriend is one of them. I constantly correct her steering because of all the near hits even though she's not going over 25. Driving is not for everyone.. some people get comfortable with their automobile after a time of practice and others never will.
Another thing that has been bugging me during my time here... is nobody uses their indicators. Now, maybe they should do a few campains for that.Comment

I agree, I drive very defensive on the roads coz there's too many idiots on
the road too busy with other stuff than driving. Cellphones, fucking around
with the radio. Operating their satnav while driving.
Ladies the mirrors fitted inside your car are NOT to do your makeup while
driving. Old folks that have zero visibility and a reaction response time
slower than a a turtle crawlings backwards.... You kids who THINK they
can drive showing off their pimped out ricers to their mates. The list
goes on and on. Whenever I want to get rid of my frustration by racing
cars. I head out to a track. I think all drivers should do that once every
while. Race your car in a controlled environment.....that would reduce
the amount of people who would race on public roads. Especially if they
crashed their car on a track once.....lolComment

True but being an experienced driver makes you a lot more aware of the lawsOriginally posted by rowanBeing an experienced driver doesn't change the laws of physics. The faster you go the longer your stopping distance.
of physics. By knowing what those laws of physics mean you adapt the way
you drive.......for example by looking on the road a lot further ahead than
regular drivers.
Experienced drivers still will be able to stop a car in less distance than
unexperienced drivers. Experienced drivers can avoid objects factor 10 times
better than inexperienced drivers coz they have much better control over their
vehicle and know exactly when to brake, stear and release breaks when they
have to do an emergency manouvre.

A poll last year showed that i believe 90% of all drivers think they are better drivers than other people.
Think about this. You are one of them.Comment

If you're really that concerned about my driving skills then I'm more than happy
to do an advanced driving test on a track together with you at a driving school
and track of your choice. We'll make it a nice day with a romantic diner, take
pics and hold hands while we're taking the tests.Comment

Im not trying to push anything. Im just trying to get you to realize that 9 out of 10 people think EXACTLY the same as you. And that are the same people who cause accidents. (just like the other 10% btw).Comment
