I agree with you about respecting the military and it's role in the US' strength. Though I never served, my father did and both my grandfathers did. My grandfather was a gunner on the USS Enterprise. I believe it was the most decorated US ship during World War II. I have a picture of him taken just a few days after Okinawa sitting at his gun. I also have all his war medals.
