...heh.
First of all, Iraq was never a threat to the US. Part of the reason Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world was US backing during the Iran-Iraq war. They weren't a threat in desert storm, they aren't a threat now. No country is going to attack the United States so let's put the word "defense" in the trash for now.
Second. Al Qaeda isn't some military threat that is going to invade the US. They're camel jockies. They're angry. Angry enough that they are willing to kill themselves to prove a point, or to just have someone listen. I think if someone is going to kill themselves in order for you to hear them, perhaps they deserve some of your time. I doubt any marines are in a hurry to blow themselves up. Nobody picks suicide as a career choice. I wonder how many US recruits would sign up for the Army / Navy Suicide Forces. Think about it, and find out what people are willing to die for.
Almost all the Al Qaeda members involved in Sept. 11 are Saudis. Osama himself is Saudi. Yet the US attacks Afghanistan to take out "The Taliban", a government the US set up after the USSR/Afghanistan war. The Taliban aren't Saudi.
Either is Saddam.
War, in essence, reduces the value of human life to zero. But who is making this war? Is the US "backed into a corner"? Hardly. Is Saddam landing APC's on the beaches of Florida? Doubtful. Is he demanding UN Inspectors search for weapons that not only the US has developed that are illegal according to UN treaties, but practically flaunts? Leaked Pentagon documents released today from a US atomic watchdog group indicate the US is developing miniature nuclear weapons, in violation of the global Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.

So who's the bad guy?
The US spends a lot of money on the military. They either have to use it, or get rid of it. They're using it. That's fine with me, you buy the biggest guns, then you get to shoot em. But lets be honest. The President of the US has the single minded task of doing what is in the best interests of the US, whether it is military or economic, or policital. Fine. I accept that. It is the way of the world and always has been. Don't tell me you're just "defending" yourself by invading other countries. Be honest. I'm not retarded.
And for the love of god don't tell me you're "defending" me, soldier. Your country has borders. Protect them from invaders. Anything else is meddling in stuff that isn't your business for your own gain. I could care less if you do, just don't LIE to me about it and make me think wistfully of your selfless offering to mankind. You want me to applaud the heroes? It isn't someone that walks into another country and starts putting bullets in the locals.
I like how the poster makes references to Nazi Germany. When did the US bother to get involved in the war in europe in WWII? After France fell? No. After Belgium? No. Holland? No, us Canadians saved their asses. I think it was sometime after London was bombed into oblivion that they decided it was time to stop Germany from wiping out their trading partners.
Why do you think Americans are hated in nearly every country in Europe, South America, etc etc. Because you're "better" than them, or they are jealous? Why do you think American backpackers wear Canadian flags?
Take a look over the fence some time. Your country is #1 not because of proud, brave marines defending the homeland. There hasn't been war inside the united states for over 100 years at least. Your country is #1 because they keep the other guys down, or in line. Just like any other country would do. But you are no different and no better than the countries you repeatedly invade. Remember that. You're the one firing bullets at someone else's home, in someone else's country.
You are the ones devaluing human life.
The end.
