    How do sites like the abovementioned make money? Do they? Why do people do free hosting like that anymore? What do they get out of it?

                          Freehosting has to be financed obviously and the main method (as per on my networks) is via clean header & footer text links which are displayed across every page on all members sites.

                          404 traffic is another element as mentioned already but the main area which enables a network to offer totally free web hosting is from these header + footer ads (in my case anyway).

                              Another way most free hosting companies make money is by maintaining large community forums and then making revenue by forcing free hosting clients to post at those forums.

                              That way the forums become very popular and free hosts can make money by using those forums to sell advertising.

                                  I had some pages on free hostin before - they deleted all my stuff later and direct ther 404 error trffic to their own pages ... so fucked up biz
