Russia came damn close to losing Moscow and if the Germans had not had troops committed elsewhere i,e France, North Africa etc then it is likely they would have taken Moscow and Russia would have gone with it. The fact is that the Allies were hugely interdependant - take one of them out of the equation and who knows how events would have turned out. Regarding Europe in WWII it is certainly true that perhaps the biggest part of the war was played by the Russians, and essentially by an even more murderous leader than Hitler (Stalin). If Russia would have continued to fall as quickly as it was there is no doubt Germany would of won the war. That said, the USA played an absolutely enormous part in the pacific war, and were it not for them alone Australia would of certainly been conquered by Japan, along with the rest of the nations in the region. Britian, who Australia had relied upon up until that point, was obviously in their own fierce battle and could not truly fight in the pacific, and whilst Australians did fight bravely there isn't any real comparison been the Australian armed forces and the Japanese at that point.
