    Europe Announces new TLD

    Amsterdam - March 31st 2006

    EU announces new TLD

A week before the end of the "landrush" period for registration of .eu domains, the European Union finds itself talking about a new TLD.

The new Commission Regulation 401.2006 saying that .eu domains can not contain any sexually provocative material caused a lot of protest amongst entrepreneurs in the online adult entertainment industry. This industry is one of Europe's most important growth markets. The Registry and the European Commission has recognized the issues that may occur from this decision and announced to be working on a second European-exclusive TLD to be launched within a period of 6 months. This TLD would be especially focused on the online adult entertainment industry. After long deliberation the final choice will be between .sex and .cum.

The EC announced an investigation into both possible TLD's .cum and .sex. The Amsterdam-based agency Fiberracks NV will be performing a research which will eventually be issuing an advice on the new TLD. Dennis Bruin, CEO of Fiberracks said, "We will be working closely with owners of Europe-based online adult entertainment companies to see what they think is the best option. Obviously .sex seems to be an easy choice, 'sex' is a common word in countries throughout Europe. There are more factors to consider, though: 'sex' will still be easy for minors to come up with, 'cum' is something they will not think of easily".

In a reaction to the .xxx TLD plans being cancelled on the last moment, Jacques Waas Villagers, spokesman of the European Commission for E-business, said, "It would not really matter if that were indeed true. It will not stop us from going through this investigation phase. We will go ahead with this project. Our goal is to have a clean .eu TLD. All provocative content is
perfectly welcome on the new TLD and Fiberracks NV will help us making the best possible decision." Before the .xxx cancellation news was public, Waas Villagers said, "No we will not just 'join' the .xxx TLD. We all know that the USA would be far more represented on it, just like it happened with .com. Introducing a strong equivalent would be far more effective."

Fiberracks announced their research to last a month and that their final advice will be issued on May 1st.

Yeah I heard this on the news as well. I find it strange. I mean a .xxx in the USA okay. But I thought Europe was liberal :-(

Oh well, not much we can do about it. Hopefully the new registrations will not be to expensive.

Also, we will have .com .net .xxx .eu .nl and now ALSO .sex etc. I'm pretty sure also other LTD's will lose typo's due this...

I gotto code a browser plugin that will just catches all address bar input and
makes sure the surfer will actually go to the site he wants to go to. With all
these new TLD it's only gonna get real confusing for surfers.

I see .info and .name sites occasionally, and .jobs is now available as well.
