Everytime the United States starts to show off new weapons there is a war..

I remember they were showing off some new jet and soon after that they are bombing somebody with it

700 Tonnes? That's about 1,400,000 lbs of explosives.

To be honest that almost sounds impossible, not only in terms of payload weight, but delivering that on what kind of platform??

Yipes, Iran's facilities must be buried way way down.

The GBU-43 (MOAB) is the biggest one in the arsenal currently and that's only an 18,000 pounder.

Our biggest transport plane the C130 Hercules can only carry 45,000 lbs of cargo on 7 pallettes.

Thinking about it, that has to be either a misprint or a non-practical device test just testing a non-nuclear explosive mechanism.

No plane I'm aware of could transport a bomb with that much weight.

might be the equivalant(sp) of 1.4mil tons of dynamite like how nukes are measured. Or it's not delivered via plane.

I think Fedex will take care of it and send it to the nuclear plants in Iran. I wouldn't want to be the guy delivering it and signing it.

they are using conventional weapons/explosives to simulate a nuke.
if it were to be delivered it would be a nuke.

Duh. It's not even a missile OR bomb. It's a BURIED charge they are testing. I was thinking of MOAB.

"Divine Strake is a high-explosive (HE) test sponsored by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and is scheduled for the summer of 2006 at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The test is a detonation of a 700 ton buried heavy AN/FO charge above a tunnel structure. The main purpose of the test is to study ground shock effects on deeply buried tunnel structures. Of secondary interest is the airblast produced by a buried charge and its modification as it propagates over the local terrain."

A misprint in a story like this would surprise me.

I am no expert in explosives, but I believe that "700 tonnes" is only a measurement of the destructive power yield, not the payload weight of the ordinance.

I think "Tonnes" is an abbreviation for "Tonnes of TNT."

I believe that large explosives are calculated by "Tons of TNT" yield. For example, nuclear weapons are measured in kiloton or megaton yields. That doesn't mean they weigh that much, only that they pack that much punch.

So, for a conventional explosive, if you have an advanced explosive that is more powerful than TNT pound for pound, that could account for the disparity.

Somebody please corect me if I am wrong.
