HOWTO: Bring the internet to it's knees in 15 minutes.

According to an article in the latest issue of the RISKS digest, Nicholas Weaver of UC Berkeley has written a description of a new type of worm, the Warhol Worm. He believes that using a divide-and-conquer method, all vulnerable machines over the entire IPv4 addressspace could be compromised in only 15 minutes!

I think the challenge is on right now with all the hackers out their of who will be the first person to cause the most damage to the internet.

You can tell hackers out their are all trying to be the first one to "bring the internet down"

I think it could happen but will be only short term.

It's a challenge to them. They get alot of fun out of it, but most importantly, they get recognition from fellow hackers. Same as when you got a half million uniques in your pocket at the end of the day.

Then they should hack eachother's machines and not fuck around with a business's who just wants to stay in business.

And if I ever get half a million uniques it's because the the tgp's are posting my galleries like crazy, not cause I was running a script to fuck their machines up.

hackers do damage but they never win...

since the internet is a relatively new thing, there is a lot of young hackers, who will be grown ups soon and try to get a job. they will most likely get jobs like security management.

after that, there wont be as much problems with hackers as there is right now

Why even bother with a worm? The internet is far more vulnerable than that.

Hint: Root nameservers. Hold all 20 or so of the .com/net/org root servers down for over 24 hours, and you'll have the same DNS problems that GFY had yesterday.. Only for the entire com/net/org spectrum.

The nature of DNS would take it a *while* to correct, if the attack was well thought-out enough.

I mean, think about it. A small handful of machines that are critical to the entire internet functioning correctly. L33t DoS kiddies easily can throw 2gbps+ of packets around at 10+ IRC servers at the same time.. Just throw a few hundred mbps at each root server and say goodbye internet.

Luckily, it's not as cool for the hackers to do this yet so it hasn't happened. Only a matter of time though..

                      -Phil

My friends over at AWI always say that there is a badass hacker called Lame or such... he must be really dangerous. He is being held responsible for releasing the Red Worm.... !
