All that stuff *is* in the movie. Xerxes is presented and dramatized as a tyrant. The Greeks are freemen who don't understand the Persian ways. Gorgo appears before the Spartan court. Some hundreds of men fought the Persian Army for a few days at Thermopylae which lead to the eventual Persian defeat.
My point about reading Herodotus (and commentaries on Herodotus) is that it helps to understand the perspective of the movie. But either way, it *is* there.
