Think of it this way.

Google does not want any dead links on it's site.
So which site is likely to stay up?
One that's been up for 12 years or one that went up last month?
Which site are you going to put up top to get clicked first so that your
surfers don't think your site is full of dead links?

Dead links will ruin a search engine faster than less relevant content.

Less relevant content is still content, but dead links are nothing.
Is that why the 8 year old domain in your sig is redirected to a parked page? Is that not a dead site now by this same logic?
