Does Age of a Domain Name Matter?

When a search engine like Google is looking at your website, does it take into account how long your site has existed on that domain name? Or does it care at all about the age of your domain?

if the domain has been active, yes

if it just sits there inactive I haven't noticed a difference

I have thrown up a blog on a domain that was 3 years old before and gotten indexed instantly, and in the same hour thrown up a brand new blog on a domain I just purchased and it takes 24 hours or so to index

Google scores a domain with X.

X = expiry date minus creation date. For example, you have a domain that was registered in 1993 and expires in 2015.

      In that case, your X = 22

Reason is because the older the domain, more likely to be valuable. The longer domain is registered, the greater the committment is considered to be accorded to that domain and the less transient the domain is likely to be. Google also accords more value in PR transfer from domains with higher X value for the above reasons.

Its just one factor but it is a factor.

it's not about how fast you get indexed, it's about how well you rank. as vendot says, domain age is a ranking factor google takes into account.

I have noticed that the faster I get indexed the better my rankings are for that particular blog

new domain that I just registered need a little bit more work to get them high

Aged links and content > Aged domain.

It isnt the best answer but your questions won't answer what you want to know. If they do, then yes they take into account, yes it matters. But there is reasons why they are desired, its not just cause they are "old".

The "short answer 'yes'" is probably the best answer.

I can rank a newly registered domain in the same time I can rank a 3 year old domain. In my case I have not seen any greater results when using aged domains.

Age of domain name is often misunderstood with older registration date. Its not that older registered domain will rank better.

For example, people think a domain registered in 2001 will rank better than the one registered in 2005. Its not true.

Ask yourself, what is the purpose and main target of Google? To deliver relevant and quality results. How you can be sure that an older domain cannot have crappy content and spam?

What is age factor then? Its the age of website and backlinks to it. A website which has been live for 3 years on a domain registered in 2005, will rank better than the one which has been live for 2 months on a domain registered in 2001, assuming all other factors remain same.

Ask yourself above question again, how it can be sure that a website live for 3 years cannot have spam and crappy content? Here comes the trick Google does, it watches its backlink increase/decrease rate. If they have been increasing steadily over the time, its all good domain must have valuable content. But if the backlinks has been decreasing (which is a must have for low quality content), then it mark the website as not worth of ranking.

                              hope it helps.

I have a 10 year old domain that is a piece of shit but it will come up first in google for almost anything I put in it's title. Sites that have tons of
back links etc... can beat it out but not some new domain with 10 back links.

                                Think of it this way.

Google does not want any dead links on it's site.
So which site is likely to stay up?
One that's been up for 12 years or one that went up last month?
Which site are you going to put up top to get clicked first so that your
surfers don't think your site is full of dead links?

Dead links will ruin a search engine faster than less relevant content.

Less relevant content is still content, but dead links are nothing.

                                          Oh boy.

abc.com redirects to abc.go.com so is abc.com a dead domain?

Your auction has dick to do with the question posted in the thread, and there was more contradiction in what you said then confirmation.

Your post above made little to no sense. As you can see i wasn't the only one who thought so.

10 year old parked domain that has had no external links pointing to it will not score better than a brand new domain all other things being equal.

10 year old domain (never been dropped) that has had links pointing at it ....ie: (spiders can find it) has CONSIDERABLE advantage over a brand new domain all other things being equal. www.archive.org is your friend.

it does seem to matter, along with how many years into the future a domain is registered for.

Of course everyone is an SEO expect these days.
