                  If I understand what you're asking, you just need to setup WP correctly (options, plugins, theme redesign).

                  Im not sure what a desktop blogging client will help you do with SEO

                                              I've read the same thing about WP choking under high loads but am not sure about the accuracy. There is a plugin which helps cache pages that is supposed to lessen overall server load.
