If today is Friday, and you say next Monday...

Would you take that to mean this coming Monday, or the one after?

          The way I was taught...

"next" nearly always means the one after "this coming" (i.e. 7 to 13 days away)

"this coming" would mean the one immediately after the weekend.

That said, it does appear to be an aspect of confusion in our culture, as it seems a lot of people don't know or use the proper cases for each.

Qualification: in your case, that's what using "this coming" would mean.

Like, if someone said 'next Tuesday', would think he meant tomorrow, or the next one?

Even though I believe my previous definition is both in line with yours and the proper definition, I think it means different things to different people.

That's one of the reasons I try and always set my definition when working with days of the week... I'll typically say "Next xday... meaning not this coming xday, but the next one" or "this coming xday," depending on which I mean.

Granted, when I say the former, I sometimes get a "I know what that means, bone-head" look... but I reckon that's better than some misunderstanding forming causing one of us to be a week off in related matters.

My mom and I go round and round and round about this, lol. Listening to us trying to make plans or schedule something is like "who's on first?".

If it's Friday and I say "next Monday", I literally mean the very next Monday. As in 3 days from now.

She always takes "next __day" to mean the week after next (which I would call "a week from Monday" or "Monday after next").
