did those small brakes ever work? when I see the heavy H-D and those mini small breaks I have to ask...

no offence, just curious since Ive spent a lot of time on bikes, but in time I started you probably had more than 200k miles already

Mechanical front brakes did little more than keep you from rolling backwards if you were stopped on a hill. On a very steep hill they were useless. You may have seen choppers in the old days that had shaved lower legs primarily because the brakes were worthless anyway, so might as well look cool.

My early bikes always were suicide shifts (no cable backup) so I left the brakes on for a little help on the hills.

BTW, if you are looking at the right side of the bike, that is not a brake, just a dust cover.

actually, on the shovelhead the dust cover is on the left . . . so depends on what pic you are looking at
