My major in college was History, and as a result of extensive studies, I have long suspected that JFK and RFK negotiated some sort of secret non-invasion treaty with Cuba in exchange for ending the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the US occupying Guantanamo Bay as a military base, as well as other considerations.
The U.S. continued to honor this secret agreement as a result of the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and after the murder of the two Kennedy brothers.
Little else would explain our subsequent activities elsewhere in the Caribbean (Grenada), Central America (Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua) and South America (Chile, etc), while we let a small island nation remain independent, even though it flaunted Socialism in our faces, just miles off our shore, for decades.
