As has been said, these are Primaries... not general elections.

Think of the Primaries as unofficial polls... so that the powers that be in individual parties (namely Democrat, Republican, Green, etc.) can get a feel for who the people favor... the actual decision on who's representing the party isn't made until the Party conventions... and, even then - generalizing things a bit - the decision's made in a method prescribed by the party itself... generally speaking, if they wanted to (not that they would - for a variety of reasons), the individual Parties could scrap the results of the Primaries all-together and start from scratch at the convention - throw their support behind multiple candidates - or even decide they're not going to submit a candidate for the Presidency at all.

Personally, I think that we should go the way that George Washington would have preferred, and do without Political parties all together.

But then, that'd mean the average American would have to start being a lot more informed and well-read on political matters... so that's not likely to happen any time soon.
