Tempra, you should probably go for 800x600 as the default, there are still lots of people running at 640x480. Go for the masses until you think of something better, best bet is to try to make your page look decent at different sizes.

So with those in mind for a gallery/site

Max width of page elements should be no more than 600 pixels wide. 590 to be safe. (Almost no one will scoll sideways.)

Most important shit goes in the top 400 Pixels. (Lots of people don't like or know to scoll down)

Thumbnail images should be compressed to the smallest size possible while still retaining an acceptable look. Adobe ImageReady works well for this. (other progs may work better)

No uneeded elements, (big backgrounds, distracting animations) anything that will make the visitor wait more that 10 seconds before they see some porn

Or you could always set your tables as percentages and that might cure a bunch of it right off the bat...

Setting your tables to % still has problems, cause you have to design your page elements to fit into the 600X400 range.

Keep the table at 590 or 600 wide then never have to worry about what it may do?

ezekiel is 100% correct. Who knows more about online marketing than Amazon? What size do they use? 590. When in doubt - check Amazon out....

Here is another cool tool - the WebTV emulator - if it works there - it will work anywhere (well not really , but I thought it sounded better). It even has a virtual remote.
