Susan Eisenhower, `Lifelong Republican,' Backs Obama (Update1)
By Ryan J. Donmoyer
Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The granddaughter of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, saying the Illinois senator can forge bipartisan cooperation and ``encourage ordinary Americans to stand straight again.''
Susan Eisenhower, writing on the Washington Post opinion pages today, said Obama is best positioned to ``bring about a sense of national unity and change'' and can attract the crossover voters from the Republican Party to make it happen. It was Obama's first endorsement by a prominent Republican.
``If the Democratic Party chooses Obama as its candidate, this lifelong Republican will work to get him elected and encourage him to seek strategic solutions to meet America's greatest challenges,'' wrote Eisenhower, 57, an author and business consultant. ``To be successful, our president will need bipartisan help.''
Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, was elected president in 1952, the last contest that didn't feature an incumbent president or vice president. Susan Eisenhower wrote that a coalition of Democrats, Republicans and young voters can deliver Obama a victory that would ``assure the world and Americans that this great nation's impulses are still free, open, fair, and broad-minded.''
