I disagree. There are a number of other things which seperate the two:

The ultimate aim of the phenomenon.
Philosophical premises.

i.e. are they after religious or mystical experience (the basis of the major traditions) or a protection mechainism, (animism etc), or making money/gaining power (most New Religous Movements).

You can argue this shit from various points of view. Ultimately my own reflex is to call Scientology a cult as it was brought into being by a crooked Science Fiction author.
