Well, I'm waiting for my bill from my ER stay last Friday with the Kidney Stone. I live in Canada, but I'm not Canadian, so don't have BC Med. The nurse told me I was the "model patient". I had "crazy Hindu" lady next to me, who didn't speak a word of English. Then, the old man across for me that didn't know where he was. He pissed all over everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!!!! So I'm waiting to see how much this will cost me. I'm thinking in the 2-3k range.
HOLY FUCK! I just got my hospital bill!!

When they ask you if you're the sole support for your family, say yes....when we didn't have insurance, I had pneumonia and the bill was like 15k. I ended up paying them fitty dolla a month for the reduced price of 2k.Originally posted by jerzeemediathinkx,
You can apply for something here called "Charity Care" if you don't have insurance (which I don't) and you'll be left paying nothing or a percentage IF they approve you. Heh.
This year, gallbladder surgery cost was 30k and my bill was fitty dolla.

Jeezus that's absolutely insane! I always thought it was the opposite... that people without insurance get charged less than those who do have insurance.Originally posted by polsterThere was a story on 60 minutes this week how hospitals charge people 4x the amount for same procedures without insurance than they charge people with insurance.
Here is a link to the story: Hospitals: Is the Price Right?
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1362808.shtml
One thing that confused me about that article though is that they say that the insurance companies dictate how much that are willing to pay for medical services and that the hospitals will accept that amount as payment. However, in my case I always seem to get stuck paying the remainder of what the insurance company refuses to pay. So if my total bill is $500 and my insurance company says "We are only going to pay $300 for that service", I end up paying the other $200 out of my own pocket. That seems somewhat contradictary to what the article was saying. Maybe it just depends on which insurance company you have...See what's new at

That doesn't really apply anymore, the insurance carriers all have negotiated rates with all their in-network medical providers for every procedure. So whether you tell them before or after, the charge to your insurance company will be the same.Originally posted by Loryn-Adult.comI understand totally. I owe over $50,000 and when I didn't have insurance it was less per hospital stay than when they I got insurance. If you have insurance the hospital charges more. If you don't have insurance then they charge less. Same with any other doctor. You can thank frivolous lawsuits for that shit.
So I tell them I don't have insurance, then when I get the bill I say I am so sorry I completely spaced it out I do have insurance here is the number and they can't up the bill then haha. It works every time! LOL Fuckers. They are part of what makes it so hard for small businesses to get better insurance plans for their employees, that and frivolous law suits, money hungry people.
Makes me sick, but I still am very against the government handling our health insurance. The DMV is so fucked up imagine what they would do to our hospitals. We would all be in rooms like you were in the basement with gross walls over crowed people there for no reason. No one get's turned away in America if you don't have insurance. I got 2 operations on my foot with no insurance. So these freak tin foil hat wearing fools who like to spread fear to people by saying America is the worse because we don't let the government cover our medical are clueless. I swear it makes the head on the back of my neck stand up, those tin foils head people hate the government but want the government to pay for everything in their lives. Idiots.
Anyway if you would like to talk to me more about this off the board I know so many loops and wholes on how to get out of those bills. You just have to know how to work the system and 90% of people don't know how to and just take it up the ass. haha"WTF, on google you can find the answer to every question in human history, EXCEPT how to convert cams..

I have always stayed in-network. I used to be with HealthNet for years, and they are the company that would only pay the partial bill and I would be stuck with the remainder. My understanding was that the insurance company works out a deal in advance with in-network providers to only charge/pay a certain amount, so whenever I would receive a bill for the remainder of what the insurance company wouldn't pay, I could never figure out if it was the insurance company screwing me, or the healthcare provider screwing me. Either way, I was getting screwed.Originally posted by lazycashGet better insurance and make sure you only get medical treatment that is considered within their network and you shouldn't have to pay the remainder.
Our company recently switched to United Healthcare and I haven't yet had an opportunity to see if they are the same way, but from what I hear, United Healthcare is one of the best health insurance companies out there. I am just lucky that I work for a company that provides health insurance.
My two cents on HealthNet: for those of you looking for new health insurance, avoid HealthNet if at all possible. Their customer service sucks and I had to fight with them every single time to get them to pay my bill, and even then I always had to pay at least part of the bill on top of my co-pay.See what's new at

k more then here its $150 or so here including all kinda shit. But yeah 500 a month is a lot true.Originally posted by jerzeemediathinkx,
Maybe as deniska posted $500/mo or so, some places $250 I've seen. I'm never one to go to a hospital or doctor, and haven't in a couple of years or so, so I never justify the cost.
Maybe a mistake on my part, and I'll be looking into plans shortly perhaps.

For Americans, many hospitals and doctors, for that matter, have the nifty payment plan. There was a time that, if you reneged on paying said medical institution or medico, there was nothing they could do about it. Now, if you renege on payments, you will be thrown into collections and it will negatively impact your credit ratings.Originally posted by Mike33scary stuff
For those of you that owe thousands of dollars. How the heck do you pay that off?
There is talk now about changing the interest free payments into interest payments, kind of like a credit card. It will start out low and then get higher and higher as the , ahem, processing costs, rise.Raven

Fuck that. Don't pay it. It's extortion. That's theft as far as I'm concerned. Just say no. Let them take you to court... and kick them in the head.
Or come to the UK, and get citizenship and be on the NHS... which means you'll NEVER get charged for hospital treatment again. Of course you have to wait in line :P
