Planet terror was my favorite half of Grindhouse, but I enjoyed Death Proof as well. It was a great little valentine to the high octane car movies of the 60s and 70s with little nods to Two Lane Blacktop, Gone In 60 Seconds and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry amongst others.
I can see where others wouldn't like it. If you don't have a softspot for trashy b-flicks, then you're probably not going to enjoy it as much as those of us who own more Roger Corman movies than some people have movies ;-)
As I kept watching Death Proof, I kept thinking "Man, this feels like a Corman picture". As cool as Kurt Russell was as Stuntman Mike, I can't help but think how much better the flick would have been had Mickey Rourke stuck with the movie and played Stuntman Mike.
The movie was admittedly talky and could have used another action setpiece, but most of Tarrantino's movies are dialog-heavy anyways...
