I didn't see it so I am curious if it really was that good.

really, I will have to see it then. Better than Munich ?
What about the rap group who won Best Music/Song for Hustle & Flow? I didn't hear the song, but the acceptance speech they gave was inaudible. I couldn't understand what they were saying.

I dont think so - I think it got a boost because it was based in LA - most of the judges home town.
The whole event seemed very political to me.Comment

It was the only nominee I saw (though I plan on seeing Munich, Capote and Good Night, Good Luck) and I wasn't that impressed. I
t is good, very watchable and powerful but even by Hollywood's standards a bit of a stretch - the coincedences that the story are built around, for me, were too much and it's anti-racism message was too in-your-face.Comment

I was extremely happy about it and i felt it was VERY deserving. I figured they were going to give it to something that was "beautiful art"...instead they gave it to just a really damn good movie.
This was the first year ever I actually gave a crap about who won and when Crash took it home I felt like my sports team had just won or something.

I just saw Lord of War yesterday. It was pretty good.
I liked the performance of the Crash song during awards show tho. that was done very well.

Its out on DVD - judge for yourself. :-)
Out of all the Best Picture Nominees I think Crash and Munich we're the best. Wife dragged me to Brokeback which was good -but not as good as Crash.C H R I S

Its all political.
Its like winning a big woody award at the players ball, or a XBiz award..
There were so many in the circle when it came to crash, how could it not win??
Nevertheless, crash was a good movie.. But when I saw it in the theatre almost 1 year ago, I didnt think it was Oscar worthy...
Strange how things work out.Last edited by boneprone; 03-06-2006, 09:32 AM.

Also a great movie.
Both were good though.

I agree with quiet - the movie was chock full of stereotypes, but not only that it had some of the stupidest dialogue you would ever hear real people say. Watching Ludacris explain why buses have windows, Tony Danza wanting the black guy to sound stupider, listening to Sandra Bullock rant at home about her attack and the lock changes - things like this would seeem at home in a 1960's liberal arts flick that was trying to explain racism, but now seem quaint and childish.
And lets not forget the great scenes with the cop and the black woman. At first he is forcing his hands all over her and later he sees her as the human being she really is and tries to save her - gees, theres an original idea.
But ultimately the movie fails because it tries to explain a situation as complex as racism with a cute little saying about the size of LA and how everyone drives and there is no human contact so that when we do have a need for contact it is a forceful thing that ends up in a crash of - what - people, ideas, violence - who knows because the movie has no responsibility and ends up giving no answers.Comment

I was pushing for Brokeback Mountain but they did win their share of awards so I guess Crash can have this one.

But it had karmic undertones and showed how lives can be affected by total strangers..
As far as answers.. I don't think it tried to give answers.. It just gave situations with the same answers that people have for so long chosen not to hear..Comment

Well i suppose its all in how you viewed the movie.. Its not a teaching tool , or educational material , its just for entertainment.. Its supposed to be chock full of stereotypes because , they are entertaining.. when was the last time you saw a movie that was "responsible" and "gave answers" ? movies are entertaining because they DONT giver answers and they are AREN'T responsible. Its just supposed to be entertaining , no a learning experience..hatisblack at yahoo.comComment

that being said i didnt think it was that great . it was fairly entertaining , but not exceptional , i didnt see the other nominees so it would unfair of me to say better or worse.hatisblack at yahoo.comComment

No, you're right, it WAS entertaining. Yet so many people watch it and walk away with this sudden break through and feel all intellectual. What? Give me a break. I'm sure there are "intellectual" movies much more deserving of some award.Originally posted by SmokeyTheBearWell i suppose its all in how you viewed the movie.. Follow the rookie cop throughout the movie. First his partner feels up some black chick. He isn't cool with that so he transfers. Later in the day he finds the husband of said black chick in a jam and he helps him out. Then later on his way home he sees a black kid (who happened to be a changed thug) on the side of the road looking for a ride home. I think he was listening to country music, too. The black kid gets in the car and instead of acting like a normal person, the cop acts like a total prick throughout the whole ride for absolutely no reason. If he was so scared of this black kid, why pick him up? Needless to say he ends up killing the black kid because he thinks he's packing.
Thats just one of the situations.Vacares - Web Hosting, Domains, O365, Security & More - Paxum and BTC Accepted

As entertaiment it was all right - but the question was did it deserve to be the movie of the year.
Wether you saw the movie as entertainment or as an intellectual examination of human frailty depends on what you expect form the material before hand. I read so much about this movie - about how it rose above the usual tripe, about how it examined the ideas of racism in a new light, but to me it didn't - everything was old hat all recycled from other material and nothing new.
The cop shooting the kid in the crusiser thinking that he was packing - you didnt think that would happen - how many movies have you seen where the young idealistic cop turns out to be the dark evil cop after seeing so much blood and guts - it happens in almost every cop movie ever made.Comment

Originally posted by quietno. it was mediocre, chock full of stereotypes. watch-able, but not much else.
I almost always agree with you on films.
Here is what happened. It is a film that half of Hollywood was in, it was about LA and they lobbied really hard. Also, it is the least 'artsy' film of the lot and the least politically loaded to vote for. Sure it was about race but who is going to slam them for saying it isn't okay to be racist? On the other hand the rest of their choices were two films about gay men, one about the blacklists which Hollywood is usually interested in but at this time smacks of too liberal and lastly one about Israelli hit squads.
Crash is the type of film that people that never watch complicated cinema or world cinema think is really risky and smart.Last edited by Sarah_Jayne; 03-06-2006, 11:42 AM.Comment

I don't think that was the reason they won. LGF did a huge and unprecedented Oscar campaign for the movie, which might have been the reason why it pulled off this upset.Originally posted by damian2001I dont think so - I think it got a boost because it was based in LA - most of the judges home town.

Hell yeah! Crash ourperforms Munich any day. Munich pales incomparison.Originally posted by The Adult Brokerreally, I will have to see it then. Better than Munich ?
Don't get me wrong; Munich is a good movie - it's just like 30 minutes too long and really is nothing but a glorified documentary. Probably only hyped up because Steven Spielberg is behind it. Crash is a heads-on, real-life depiction that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat. Awesome movie.
So yes, Crash definitely deserved to win. Big time.CheapAssDesigns.com - when you need quality designs at affordable prices.

The movie is very good im my oppinion, it is definately at least as good as any of the others that were nominated. I really liked it though, and I can not say that much for the others.
So it would have gotten my vote too."Think about it a little more and you'll agree with me, because you're smart and I'm right."

Actually it confronts a lot of racial stereotypes, and if you read any of the bio stuff on the movie, or the DVD extras you would better understand.Originally posted by Captain CanadaI agree with quiet - the movie was chock full of stereotypes, but not only that it had some of the stupidest dialogue you would ever hear real people say. However, trying to cram anything of substance into 2 hour watchable time window is always difficult, and we see this in any number of examples in movies over the last century.

I haven't seen the other movies but I think this one did a good job explaining some of the racial stereotypes. Maybe some of the scenes were "over the top" but they definately weren't unbelievable.
The movie was obviously meant to leave you with more questions about stereotypes and maybe even an underlying suggestion to give people the benefit of doubt before applying any of your stereotypical tendencies. It has accomplished that or people wouldn't be talking about it.erik AT suthnet.comComment
