Next Photoshop Tip

This is the first one by request from what people asked for here so I hope ya'll find it useful.

Making better looking thumbs and doing them in batches.

I should note with this that I am not recommending Photoshop to batch process thumbs but for those that don't have other programs this is a good way to do it. The most important part of this tip to most webmasters here will be the simple step that makes thumbs jump out and be much more clear looking and that is a step you can save into a batch by itself.

Maybe I'll compile them all into one someday. For now I'm so busy with the businesses that put food on my plate that this is just a once a week thing I do for the love of it and a couple Google bucks every day. =] Thanks for the vote of confidence though.

What programs would you suggest for making thumbs in batches? All the ones I've tried make the thumbs look too pixilated.

Question... In Photoshop 7.0 I used to be able to ctrl click the layer and it would select everything in that layer. Not ctrl-a style, it would only select the actual data in the layer. In CS 2.0 this doesn't happen when you ctrl-click the layer. Why? What is the keyboard shortcut now?

That had me baffled for a bit too. You just have to ctrl-click in the little screencap of the layer in the leyers pallette. If you click over the layer name or anywhere else on it, it does something else.

I've been using Compupic to batch process images into thumbs or watermark, etc... It seems to not get along with Outlook sometimes and crash though. I have to make sure Outlook isn't running as a background process (sometimes it is closed but still running).

I don't now about you guys but my droplet does not work. I have an action named "thumb edit" which performs some core balance, changes the contrast and brightness and then uses the Save for web option. I did everything as it is displayed in the tutorial but I get an error saying "The command color balance is currently not available.

Anyone has any ideas what does it mean?

Commands not coming up can happen for a couple reasons. If you have for instance the text tool selected on the tool box, a bunch of command won't work. If you're working with a text layer that hasn't been rasterized yet, the same problem will occur. Sounds like you're editing pics though so check the tool that's selected and make sure you're working off a flattened file or on the corrcet layer of the files you are running. They are jpegs right?

Gracias... When you ctrl click the layer name it adjusts to acting on the entire picture (all layers are treated equally)... So if you use a filter or use the Image | Adjustments options, you are going to effect all of the layers, not just the one you have selected. Do it again and you revert back to just that layer. You will also notice the title bar of the picture changes to reflect this:

Layer 0 RGB/8

or

RGB/8

Thanks for the thumbnail click tip... now I can be more productive again!
