elections for dummies

Ok Gore won all the states Kerry won except NH and Kerry won all the states Gore won except NM and Iowa. Now let's say that ANY combination of democrats would win all those states excpet for NM, Iowa and NH. That's 248 electoral votes.

Now let's say Hillary/Obama somehow also wins NM, Iowa and NH that's 264. that's still 6 electoral votes shy of winning.

Now we know Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, N Dakota, S Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska are not voting democrat. Some of you here are willing to write off the south too. So that eliminates W Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, N Carolina, S Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas. Also Oklahoma and Texas aren't voting dem either.

Ok so which red state does that leave? Well in the west there's Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. Nevada only has 5 electoral votes so even if they win that state they're still short. And if McCain wins the GOP nomination you can forget any of those 3 states.

So what's left. Indiana, Missouri( 11 ), Ohio( 20 ) and Florida( 27 ). Now Indiana always votes republican so forget that one. Now any one of the other 3 states can win the election provided the dems win NM( 5 ), NH( 4 ) and Iowa( 7 ). If the dems lose Iowa then or if they lose NM and NH, then Missouri won't matter. They'll still be short

If they lose all 3 then Ohio won't matter they'll still be short. So basically the Dems need to win Florida to guarantee the election and that's a pretty big fucking bet to make to hedge the election on ONE fucking state. Common sense would dictate spreading the risk around.
